John Oliver Doesn’t Want Paramount as WBD ‘Business Daddy’

John Oliver called out extraordinaryWarner Bros. used its opening monologue to comment on the potential ownership change on Sunday’s episode of the HBO series. He suggested purchasing Discovery. “We may be getting a new business dad!” Oliver said at the beginning of the show (via Diversity). HBO, Warner Bros., which broadcasts the program. Under the announced terms, Paramount intends to acquire all outstanding WBD shares for $31 per share in cash. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and shareholder approval, the companies said.
Oliver made it clear that he was less than enthusiastic about the development. “Yeah, not great news. In fact, to quote anyone who accidentally sat down with their Roku remote, I’m at Paramount right now… how do I get out of here?” he said.
Oliver previously worked for Paramount and Warner Bros. He had publicly criticized the possibility of the Discovery combination. When the first discussions of the deal surfaced in 2025, he said: “Please stay away from us. You are not my real business dad and you never will be!”
