Ian Huntley blinded and set to die as major update given on child kill | UK | News

It has been claimed that Ian Huntley was blinded by the beating he received in prison last week and that the chances of him surviving the attack are “extremely” low. The 52-year-old double killer was placed on life support after being attacked with a spiked metal pole at HMP Frankland in County Durham.

Huntley, who is serving a life sentence for murdering schoolgirls Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman in Soham in August 2002, is not expected to regain consciousness after the brutal attack. Triple murderer and rapist Anthony Russell, 43, reportedly hit himself with a pole up to 15 times in a prison workshop.

As reported by SunA source said: “It now looks like he won’t make it unless a miracle happens. Huntley never recovered from his beating and never had the chance to make it.”

“Despite all the efforts of the doctors, his condition has not improved much since day one. It seems to be only a matter of time. It could be days, it could be weeks. This is probably for the best. Very few people will shed tears.”

Russell, who is suspected of attacking Huntley last Thursday (February 26), allegedly shouted: “I did it! I did it! I killed him, I killed him!” A source said Huntley’s head was “split in two” and his mother told friends her son was unrecognizable after the attack.

A source added: “Doctors have done wonders to keep him alive this long and they have to treat every patient the same.

“But they’re monitoring him very closely and he’s not responding well or showing signs of improvement. They’re doing brainstem tests and it doesn’t look good for Huntley.”

“And if by some miracle he survives, he will most likely be blind and not much left of him. He hit him directly in the eye and also suffered brain trauma that will affect his vision. The injuries to his head are so bad you can’t identify him in a hospital.”

Huntley’s mother Lynda Richards, 71, drove 175 miles from her home in Lincolnshire to be with him in hospital. Following the attack, doctors reportedly gave him a 5 percent chance of survival.

Police have yet to make an arrest in connection with the prison attack, although they have a suspect. Durham Constabulary said: “A 52-year-old man remains in hospital in a serious condition.”

Meanwhile, a Prison Service spokesman said: “It would be inappropriate to comment while police are investigating.”
