Rep. Tony Gonzales announces he will not seek re-election amid House Ethics investigation into affair

Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, announced Thursday evening that he will not seek reelection amid a House Ethics investigation into an affair he admitted to having with a former staffer.
Gonzales, a married father of six, admitted to the affair for the first time Wednesday, a day after advancing to the GOP primary runoff for his congressional district.
“At the age of 18, I took an oath to defend our nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Throughout my 20 years in the Army and three terms in Congress, I have fought for that cause with my absolute devotion to the country I love,” Gonzales said in a statement. he said.
“From tackling the border crisis to standing with my communities after the worst school shooting in Texas history, my philosophy has never changed: do what you can and always fight for the greater good,” he continued.

“After deep consideration and with the support of my loving family, I have decided not to seek re-election for the remainder of this Congress while serving my district with the same commitment I have always had,” he added. “For the remainder of my term, I will continue to fight for my constituents, for whom I am forever grateful.
Gonzales admitted to the incident while speaking on a conservative radio show a day after participating in the congressional district’s GOP primary runoff.

The House Ethics Committee also opened an investigation Wednesday into Gonzales to determine whether he sexually harassed a female member of his staff and provided special privileges or favors as a result.
