The Kansas City Chiefs’ decade-long playoff run came to an abrupt end in Week 15 of last season. The Chiefs lost in the game against the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium.
Superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered a season-ending ACL injury while trying to throw for a few yards in the final minutes of the game.
At the time, the Chiefs stated that Mahomes would “immediately begin the rehab process,” but his eligibility for the start of the 2026 season remained uncertain. On Thursday, FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer provided an encouraging update on the three-time Super Bowl MVP’s recovery program.

“His pain threshold is different, his work ethic is different,” Glazer said. “The Dan Patrick Show.”
“At first they were like, ‘Oh, you know, early season.’ I’d probably take precautions against that happening [back] sooner than that. So far. Because he only attacks objects.”
Glazer also noted that doctors were able to perform the procedure before Mahomes had significant swelling, which may have hastened his recovery time.

“The initial reports were a little borderline, but I want to tell you, Patrick is different,” Glazer added.
“He had his surgery before it swelled. So it was on a Tuesday. I think it was Thursday or Friday of that week, he was already in the Chiefs’ training room rehabbing. And his knee was already bent 90 degrees at that point. It’s just different, it heals differently.”
In a message posted on social media following his injury, Mahomes thanked fans and said he would “trust God.”

“I don’t know why this had to happen,” Mahomes wrote. “And I’m not going to lie, it hurts. But all we can do now is trust God and attack over and over again, day after day. Thank you Chiefs Kingdom for always supporting me and to everyone who has reached out and sent me prayers. I will come back stronger than ever.”
The Chiefs finished the 2025 season at 6-11. Earlier this week, the team traded Trent McDuffie to the Los Angeles Rams for a package of future draft picks as part of an offseason roster revamp.
