Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s son Nishant Kumar will officially join the JD(U) on Sunday, March 8, 2026, which will mark a generational change in the party leadership, sources said.

Mr. Nishant Kumar met party MLAs and MLCs at JD(U)’s incumbent national president Sanjay Jha’s residence in Bihar on Friday, March 6, 2026, and discussed their future strategy at length.

Senior JD(U) leader Sharvan Kumar was the only Bihar Minister present at the meeting.

Mr. Nishant Kumar, an engineering graduate in his 40s, will join the JD(U) at its headquarters in Patna in the presence of senior leaders, including Mr. Jha, party sources said.

Mr. Nishant Kumar has endeared himself to people with his modesty on the rare occasions when he is seen in public. While interacting with the media, he also gave glimpses of how he closely follows the good deeds of his father.

Meanwhile, speculations are also rife that Mr. Nishant will become deputy CM in the new government.

A close aide of Mr. Nitish Kumar claimed on Saturday, March 7, 2026, that a “unanimous” decision was taken to make Mr. Nishant Kumar the deputy CM in the new government to be formed upon his father’s resignation.

CM Nitish Kumar filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha polls on Thursday, March 5, 2026.

JD(U) MLA from Harnaut, Hari Narayan Singh, claimed that Mr. Nishant Kumar will be elected to the State Legislative Council next month.
