Joey Barton charged after alleged assault at golf club

Former footballer Joey Barton has been charged with wounding with intent following an alleged assault near a golf club on Sunday, Merseyside Police said.
Emergency services were called to the Fairway, near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club, at around 9pm following reports a man had been assaulted.
The man, who suffered serious injuries to his face and body, was taken to hospital for evaluation, police said. He is in serious but stable condition at the hospital.
Mr Barton, 43, of Wildnes, and Gary O’Grady, 50, of Huyton, were arrested and remain in custody. They will appear at Wirral Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday afternoon.
The former football player played for clubs such as Manchester City, Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers. He was also once capped by England senior Steve McClaren.
After retiring from football in 2017, he went on to manage Fleetwood Town and Bristol Rovers.
He currently hosts the podcast ‘Common Sense with Joey Barton’, covering topics such as football, politics and “cancel culture”.
In a statement, Merseyside Police said: “We can confirm that two men have been charged following an attack in Huyton on Sunday night, March 8th.
“At around 9pm, emergency services were called to Fairway following reports of a man being assaulted near Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.”
The day before the alleged attack, Mr Barton was at St James Park in Manchester to watch Newcastle play Manchester City.
In a post on social media on Sunday he said: “It was a fantastic day being at St James’s Park under the lights last night. What a wonderful day it was to see so many friendly faces. Thank you for all your kind words. It was an honor to play for the club.”
