Former Stockton deputy police chief on leave in Reno amid investigation

(FOX40.COM) — Former Stockton police Chief Kathryn Nance is on leave in Reno pending an investigation.

Nance, now Reno’s police chief, and five officers were placed on administrative leave Monday. She was appointed to the position in early 2023 after a 25-year career in Stockton, becoming the Nevada city’s first female police chief.
The officers are on leave pending the outcome of an independent investigation into alleged and unspecified violations of Reno policies. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve said she asked the Nevada Department of Public Safety to handle the investigation to ensure its independence and objectivity.
“Public safety and maintaining the trust of our community are our top priorities,” Schieve said in a statement. “When concerns are raised about leadership at the Reno Police Department, it is our responsibility to address them thoughtfully and transparently while ensuring the safety of our residents.”
Nance spent his entire career in Stockton before moving to Reno three years ago. He started working in the department in 1996 and rose through the ranks and was promoted to captain in 2019 and assistant chief in 2020.
In 2016, he launched an unsuccessful campaign for U.S. Congress in California’s 9th Congressional District.
In Stockton, Nance investigated major crimes, primarily murders and gang violence. Reno police. As deputy chief, he oversaw the Stockton Police Department’s $53 million budget and other logistical and financial duties.
The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office, Nevada, will lead the Reno Police Department during the investigation, authorities said. Washoe County Sheriff’s Deputy Corey Solferino will serve as acting police chief.
Stockton police said they were aware of the situation but did not investigate Nance’s time with the California department.
