Rep. Christian Menefee, D-Texas, has vowed to continue efforts to impeach President Donald Trump, led by Rep. Al Green, D-Texas, even as he wages a campaign to take his seat.
But Menefee promised that impeachment attempts would have a better chance of winning party support.
“I am the candidate in this race who has a track record of standing up for my community, fighting for it, and acting effectively in a way that gets things done,” Menefee said in an interview with Fox News Digital.
Menefee, who won a special election in January to fill the seat of the late Rep. Sylvester Turner, is running against Green in a heated primary. Turner died while in office in March 2025.

The two Democrats were on a collision course last year when Republicans pushed redistricting plans to eliminate five Democratic-held seats in Texas. Green announced that Menefee will seek re-election in the 18th District, which he won in January.
While Menefee declined to specifically state his thoughts on Green and the impeachment attempts, he said his own efforts would focus on winning enough support in the House to enable them to be exonerated.
“My approach is that when I file articles of impeachment, my goal is for them to either pass or come very close to passing,” Menefee said.
“That means collaborating with other members of the Democratic caucus to make sure it’s effective. My approach generally is that if I start something, I do it because ultimately I want to get it to the finish line in a way that really helps people.”

None of Green’s impeachment efforts cleared the chamber.
His last initiative in December received the support of 140 Democrats. Notably, 23 people voted with Republicans to repeal the measure and 47 voted present.
Menefee’s words to continue pressing for Trump’s impeachment continue Green’s legacy; Although the Democratic newcomer has emphasized unity and pragmatism over political purity tests that Green has offered in the past.
Green, a 20-year veteran of Congress, has made opposing Trump his defining characteristic in recent years. She made headlines in 2026 when she was removed from Trump’s State of the Union Address for bringing a sign that read “Black people are not monkeys.”

Green was also removed from the 2025 State of the Union for refusing to take his seat while waving his cane at the president.
In his latest attempt, Green framed the impeachments as a sort of litmus test for his own party to see where they stand on whether Trump has committed high crimes or misdemeanors.
“We must participate. This is a participatory democracy. Impeachment needs the help and guidance of all of us,” Green said in November 2025 when announcing his December initiative.

Outside groups also praised Green for being willing to pose the question to Democrats in Congress. Dave Mytych, outreach leader for For Liberation and Resistance Everywhere (FLARE), praised Green’s latest efforts.
“That’s what the American people want. They want warriors who hold the line. Democrats, are you listening? Leader Schumer, are you listening? Leader Jeffries, are you listening?” Mytych said, addressing several top Democrats.

“If I’m spending time on this, it’s because I’m trying to get something done. My purpose in filing the articles of impeachment will be to remove the President of the United States, for no other purpose,” Menefee said.
Since no candidate won a majority of votes in the Texas primary held earlier this month, Green and Menefee will face each other in a runoff election on May 26.
