Residents told it’s too late to leave as raging bushfire impacts evacuation routes in Mundaring
Updated ,first published
The alert level for an out-of-control bushfire in Mundaring that is threatening homes and blocking residents’ evacuation routes has been downgraded to watch and take action.
The fire was first reported just after 2pm, prompting an emergency alert for people bordering the Great Eastern Highway, Doconing Road and Old Northam Road in Beechina.
Authorities warned that the fire was out of control and moving west, warning residents it was too late to leave safely.
The warning was downgraded later on Wednesday because the wildfire was stable but could not be contained or contained.
The Great Eastern Highway remains closed in both directions between the Great Southern Highway and Old Northam Road.
The footage from the scene shows residents trying to evacuate their horses as the fire burns near an abandoned house and a large shed surrounded by flames and pastures.
It is thought that more than 70 hectares of land burned. DFES said the cause of the fire was believed to be accidental.
Authorities warned locals to follow bushfire safety plans as the fire was closer to homes and properties.
As of Wednesday evening, air support was suspended overnight while firefighters strengthened containment lines.
