How Parramatta Eels star Jonah Pezet tore the Brisbane Broncos apart
“When you make a mistake, you have to move on with it and move on to my next job.
“My job is to help this team score points and take the pressure off Mitchell. [Moses] – I think I did that in the last 60 minutes of the game, but I need to start doing that for the 80 minutes.”
Pezet’s instinctive desire to play appeared to have unleashed Moses at half-time; he also finished off with a pair of try assists to full-back Isaiah Iongi.
Pezet was tested by fire on his Eels debut last week, recovering from a knock from former Melbourne Storm teammate Joe Chan in a 52-4 defeat. But in the encounter with Brisbane he played with newfound freedom; He took over at the line before tearing apart the Broncos’ left defense.
Pezet made the final pass for Kelma Tuilagi to set up two barnstorming efforts to score; the first after an early possession and the second after getting on the line and offering a late pass.
His spinner was headed towards him and he then forced a rare mistake from Haas for Eels hooker Ryley Smith to benefit; Those three assists came after the Eels were tackled just twice in the opening stanza inside the Broncos’ 20-metre line.
Come the second half, his instinctive strike through defensive traffic put Sean Russell in the corner and then he went ahead a minute later to score and seal a dramatic win.
“It’s just my football brain taking over and what I’ve been doing since I was a kid; taking the line and creating opportunities for others and myself,” Pezet said.
“Things get a little fast in the six-man replays, it’s going to keep getting faster and faster and Mitch and I have to keep the ball and take those opportunities. We did that in the second half.”
