Spring is approaching and it’s time to start growing seedlings that will be ready to plant in your garden in a few months.

To help cut costs, one gardener shared how you can grow lemons on your windowsill or in a greenhouse without spending money on seeds.

In a TikTok video, Simon, known online as @simonsakeroydgardener, explained how he bought risky lemons from the supermarket and planted their seeds in the ground.

He said: “How to grow lemons in stores? Lemons are easy to grow from seeds, even risky ‘rejected’ lemons.”

“Cut the lemon in half, collect the seeds, soak them in water overnight, then plant the seeds in the compost and they will start growing in no time.”

With water and plenty of sunlight, lemon seeds can grow into a “beautiful lemon bush,” eventually allowing you to harvest your own fruit.

Commenting on the video, one user said: “Last summer I grew about 30 from seed. Surprisingly about 20 survived the winter. This year I’m hoping to get them into larger pots and plant them in the ground maybe mid-summer.”

Another added: “The question is where to keep it. I had mine in a pot at home for 10 years but it had grown so big it had huge sharp thorns.”

“When I finally got him outside, he died of frostbite. Unless you have a huge greenhouse that’s heated in the winter, you’re going to have a hard time.”

A third user wrote: “Gonna try this. I didn’t know you could grow these in the UK but do you need to grow them indoors or outdoors? Please give me any advice.”

This comes after another gardener shared a warning about cutting your lawn in March, claiming it could be too early and could do more harm than good.

In a TikTok clip, the gardener, who goes by @lawnnature online, explained why people shouldn’t rush to trim their lawns in early spring. The caption reads: “Everyone is dying to get out on the grass… but trust me, wait!”

Instead, he encouraged people to do a “silencing test” before removing the mower from the shed.

He said: “If your foot stings, your lawn is not ready.”

He explained: “As the spring season approaches, many homeowners are eager to enjoy their outdoor spaces and step foot onto their lawns, but before you do so, it’s important to make sure your lawn is truly ready.

“One of the best ways to assess the condition of your lawn is to do a muffler test. This simple check can prevent you from damaging your lawn, especially if the ground is very wet.”

To perform the muting test, walk on your lawn and notice how the ground feels. If your foot is sinking and the soil feels soft, that means your lawn is not ready for mowing or heavy foot traffic.

The guidance continued: “Stepping on wet soil can compact the soil, causing potential damage and stunting the growth of your grass. Don’t worry if your lawn doesn’t pass the silencing test.”

“There are a few alternative ways to spend time in your garden while you wait for the right conditions.”

Instead, he suggested tasks like aerating the lawn, clearing debris or planning your garden layout.

He added: “These activities can support healthy grass growth and prepare your lawn for the warm months ahead.

“The bottom line is, always check the condition of your lawn before heading out with the mower. By doing the muffling test and following proper lawn care guidance, you’ll end up with a beautiful, healthy outdoor area.”
