Pima County sheriff believes Nancy Guthrie suspect could strike again

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said he believes Nancy Guthrie was targeted and that the suspect “absolutely” could strike again.

Guthrie, 84, was last seen at her home outside Tucson on Jan. 31 and was reported missing the next day. Authorities believe she was abducted, kidnapped or otherwise taken against her will.

Nanos said in an interview with NBC News that investigators believe they know why Guthrie was targeted, but would not provide details.

“We believe we know why he did this and we believe he was targeted, but we can’t, we’re not 100% sure about that,” Nanos said in the interview. “So it would be stupid to tell people, ‘Yeah, don’t worry. You, you’re not his target.’ Don’t think for a moment that just because this happened to the Guthrie family, you’re safe. No, come to your senses.”

Nanos told NBC News that he deliberately withheld his theories and other details about the case, citing the integrity of the investigation.
