Podcaster Joe Rogan doesn’t have fond memories of his life in Los Angeles, and he says on Friday’s show that he has no nostalgia for the left-wing and superficial people he met there.
Rogan spoke with actor and musician Luke Grimes about the tumultuous course of his career, including the UFC and acting.
“So once that happened, I mean, it was such a big part of my life. I thought, ‘I’m not going to do this just because it’s bad for my acting career.’ I said, ‘If my acting career goes away, I’m not doing this, no matter what.’ I’m only doing this for the money anyway.’ So I thought, ‘I’ll just figure it out,'” Rogan said with a laugh.
“By the way, you were the only person in Los Angeles with that mentality,” Grimes replied. “This has really served you well.”

“I was totally ready to get out of there. I was like, ‘I need to get the hell out of here,'” Rogan said. “I hated it. I hated being around actors. I hated being around producers and casting agents. I was like, ‘These people are so fake.'”
He added, “I was used to being around fighters and comedians and pool players, like the rudest, funniest outcasts of society. These were my people. I was used to joking around with my friends and picking on everyone else, and everyone had a great sense of humor, just stupid weirdos.”
But in the entertainment industry, he said, “All of a sudden I’m around these people and everyone had predetermined things that they thought they should say, so they were saying them, you know, and everyone liked it – it was all groupthink. It was like, ‘Oh, this is f–king… so scary.'”
Rogan is one of many celebrities who have spoken out against far-left dogmatism in places like Hollywood, despite holding some liberal positions.
As an actor, Grimes said Los Angeles treated her well, but she still embraced the idea: “Everyone was trying to be the same person, but they didn’t know who that person was.” He joked that he felt like he didn’t get the memo to do it.
Rogan joked: “Nobody got that memo. You know they were all just listening to it by ear and it all depended on what the producers and the cast wanted you to be.”

“In a place where everyone has the same politics, that’s not a good sign,” Rogan said. “… Something’s gone wrong and everyone has these progressive left policies regardless of whether any of their positions make sense. They’re all just kind of spitting it out.”
Grimes noted that people who leave their families and hometowns for the dream of making it big in the entertainment industry are deeply committed to success at all costs, to the point that they can be completely reshaped to adapt.
“Oh, he’s absolutely destroying comics,” agreed Rogan, himself a stand-up comedian. “Because when comics start doing well, as soon as they get on TV, the first thing they start doing is toning down the material. They’re toning it down a little bit, they’re getting on your nerves, they’re not saying anything that’s going to get you in trouble.”
