Tennis: Daniil Medvedev ousts Alcaraz to set Indian Wells clash with Jannik Sinner

Carlos Alcaraz’s bid for a third successive Indian Wells title was halted by the ruthless Daniil Medvedev, who edged the world number one 6-3 7-6(3) to edge Alexander Zverev 6-2 6-4 to set up a blockbuster final against the equally impressive Jannik Sinner.

The world number two Sinner scored eight aces, produced 18 winners and made just 13 unforced errors, eight fewer than her opponent, winning seven of her eight net points and extending her dominance over the German to six consecutive wins.

Zverev showed early promise by taking the lead in the opening set, but Sinner was broken twice to close out the opening set and then broken again in the second set for 4-3 on his way to ending the match.

The 24-year-old Italian did not drop a single set throughout the tournament; a streak of dominance that underscores his dominance on hard courts.

In the second semi-final of the day, Medvedev played smartly to break Alcaraz early and take a 3-1 lead, never relinquishing his advantage to take the opening set.

The second set was much more dramatic. World No.
The two traded blows in a contentious back-and-forth, eventually forcing a tiebreaker. There Medvedev was ruthless to secure his place in the final.
