Eugenio Suarez, who hit an RBI double to lead Venezuela over Team USA in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) final, tapped into his belief in his postgame interview.
“I mean, what can I say about it? It’s great. God is good, all the glory goes to the Lord Jesus. He was always with us,” Suarez told FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal when asked about his feelings after the 3-2 win over the United States.
“We must glorify his name, we must put it above all else. Nobody believed in Venezuela, but now we [won] championship today. It’s a celebration for everyone [of Venezuela]”

Suárez shared his belief after Venezuela came from behind to score a solitary goal to beat Italy on Monday night. But he knew the work wasn’t over until one more game was left on the schedule before he and the teammates he called family returned to their MLB clubs.
It was Venezuela’s dominant performance at CreditDepot Park on Tuesday night; It was a surprising showing as Team USA was held to just two hits and four total baserunners when Bryce Harper pitched with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning.

But the game turned on its head when Harper threw Andres Machado’s fastball to the center field wall, tying the game at two runs apiece. The momentum shift was visibly felt, but Suarez found himself in a great position to make it back to the Venezuelan dugout.

As Javier Sanoja stole second base, Suárez missed Garrett Whitlock’s 3-2 conversion to center field and headed to left-center field for the game-winning hit.
He stopped at second base and immediately looked up at the sky, where Rosenthal asked – what exactly did he say?
“I was just praying at the time,” Suarez said. “I pointed it out to my family there; they were happy for me. God is good, man. God is good.”
Venezuela’s upset of Team USA, one of the largest rosters the Stars and Stripes have fielded in this tournament, marked the country’s first WBC victory. For this reason, everyone, from the players to the coaches, celebrated emotionally on the field after the match.

Suarez said, “We are always together as a union. We are not just teammates, we are all a family.” he added. “This team is great; we are a family here. That’s why we play with passion, with love, because we feel it in our jerseys. We feel our country in front of us. That’s why it’s so important for us as players, people, people and as a Venezuelan. Now we are champions.”
