Story Bridge road closure, Queensland Rail lines disrupted across south-east Queensland over Easter holidays
There will be major line closures in south-east Queensland for three weeks, including Easter, and passengers will have to take replacement buses instead of trains.
Story Bridge will also be closed in whole or in part for concrete repair work below the road surface and bridge inspections on various dates throughout the Easter school holidays, affecting both motorists and pedestrians.
Translink is asking people to plan their journeys in advance ahead of rail closures from April 3 to April 26, when most lines will be affected.
The closures are required for work on major projects including Cross River Rail, phase one of the Beerburrum to Nambour rail upgrade, Logan and Gold Coast high-speed rail, Loganlea station relocation, European Train Control System and general track maintenance.
The outage will coincide with a two-week school holiday and the first week of the second term.
There will be major line closures from Good Friday 3 April until Saturday 11 April, affecting the Sunshine Coast, Caboolture, Redcliffe, Doomben, Shorncliffe, Airport, Gold Coast and Beenleigh lines.
From 12-26 April, line closures will continue on Beenleigh and Gold Coast lines only.
During this period, buses will replace trains on the affected lines.
Extra buses will be available, including express and rail buses that run through every stop, but officials say regular bus services for certain journeys may be a more convenient option for people traveling to and from the city.
NRL and AFL fans attending matches while tracks are closed have been asked to plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
The closures will impact travel to the Titans-Broncos game on April 4 at Cbus Super Stadium and the Broncos-Cowboys game on April 10 at Suncorp Stadium.
Translink acting president Dean Helm said the work was part of a wider transformation of the southeast Queensland rail network.
“We know that extended line closures can create inconvenience for customers,” he said.
“Therefore, we have coordinated work across multiple projects to be undertaken simultaneously to help minimize downtime.
“While there is never a good time for road closures, carrying out this work during the school holiday period reduces the impact as fewer customers travel on the network at this time.”
Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said the work will include the removal and installation of rail and overhead equipment around the Mayne yard facility, demolition of the platform at Moorooka station and testing and commissioning at the new Hope Island station on the Gold Coast.
There were also major line closures for five weeks in December and January.
Brisbane City Council has also recommended that the single southbound lane on the Story Bridge be closed from 9pm on Thursday, April 2 until 9pm on Saturday, April 11.
Story Bridge will be completely closed from 21:00 on Saturday, April 11 until 13:00 on Sunday, April 12.
Story Bridge will have one lane open in both directions from 13:00 on Sunday, April 12, until 05:00 on Monday, April 13.
The closures will allow workers to repair the concrete slab below the road surface, inspect the bridge and conduct other maintenance activities.
“These works are planned for the April Easter school holidays, when traffic volumes are lower, and to coincide with the closure of the bridge for the Tour de Brisbane cycling event,” the council said on its website.
The eastern footpath will also be temporarily closed at night.
The bridge’s footpaths were abruptly closed in March 2025 due to safety concerns, then reopened with temporary paving, and the council said full restoration of the bridge would be done within 15 to 20 years.
