“There are many visitor visas that were issued before the conflict in Iran, but might not have been granted if applied for now.
“Decisions about permanent stays in Australia should be deliberate decisions by government, not a random result of who books a holiday.”
There will be exceptions for partners and dependent children of Australian citizens and permanent visa holders, as well as parents of children under 18 who are already in the country, and anyone who left for Australia before today.
The government said parents of Australian citizens would also be given “sympathetic attention”.
“This measure gives the government time to properly assess the situation, while also providing flexibility in limited cases,” the statement said.
Today’s determination was made possible by emergency laws that the Albanian government quickly passed through parliament earlier this month.
The laws were supported by the Coalition but criticized by the Greens and some independents.
