Crimes dipped by 6% across country: NCRB

New Delhi: India recorded 58.85 lakh crimes in 2024, according to the latest figures released by the National Crime Records Bureau on Wednesday; This was a six per cent decrease from 2023, when 62.41 lakh cases were reported.

It was revealed that the crime rate, which is a measure of recorded cases per hundred thousand population, also decreased from 448.3 in 2023 to 418.9 in 2024.

Data are obtained from Sections 325, 326 and 329-335 of the Indian Penal Code. It showed that cases registered under ‘Injury’ category under sections recorded a massive decline of 30.58 per cent from over 6.36 lakh cases in 2023 to 4.41 lakh in 2024.

However, the report clarified that the decline in cases of ‘Injury or Grievous Hurt’ can be attributed to the changes in the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which was introduced in 2023 and replaced the Indian Penal Code, in which these sections were merged and simple ‘Injury’ was made a non-cognizable offence.

A total of 27,049 murder cases were recorded during the year; this showed a marginal decrease of 2.4 percent from the previous year; It was stated that the main motive behind the crimes was ‘disputes’, followed by ‘personal vendetta or hostility’ and ‘gain’.

‘Crime against women’ decreased by 1.5 percent compared to the previous year; 4.41 lakh cases were filed in 2024 compared to 4.48 lakh in the previous year.
The data stated that the main cause of such crimes was ‘persecution by husband or relatives’, followed by kidnapping, crimes against minors and attacks aimed at violating the chastity of women. “The crime rate recorded per lakh female population was 64.6 in 2024 compared to 66.2 in 2023,” the report said.

The report revealed that a total of 55,698 cases were registered for crimes against Scheduled Castes (SCs); This number represents a decrease of 3.6 percent compared to 2023, when 57,789 cases were recorded.

Crimes against Scheduled Tribes also showed a sharp decline of 23.1 per cent with a total of 9,966 cases in 2024 compared to 12,960 cases in 2023.
