Jaw-dropping discovery is made inside luxury yacht which ran aground on tropical island paradise of Vanuatu

Nearly two tonnes of cocaine were found to be inside a yacht that sank in the idyllic waters of Vanuatu’s Havannah Harbour.

The massive drug haul was discovered after a storm blew in from where the boat had docked on a nearby shallow cliff, prompting local authorities to subsequently alert.

The Vanuatu Police Force searched the ship and found the illegal cargo, which the Australian Federal Police said was headed for Australia.

The man who called the police told local media that two men approached him at night and asked for his help to dig out the sand under the boat in order to put it back out to sea.

He found it strange that they did this at night.

Laboratory tests later revealed that the cargo was approximately 1.6 tons of high-quality cocaine.

Police said a Lithuanian man and a British man were detained and were assisting with the investigation.

According to local media reports, the boat is being tracked by AFP for suspected smuggling and will be searched when it reaches Australian shores.

The South Pacific is a known route for smugglers trying to bring drugs into the country, and there are fears islands such as Vanuatu and Fiji could also become smaller markets along the route.

The yacht ran aground following a storm in Vanuatu’s Havvanah Harbor earlier this month, drifting towards the shore.
