Gunasekhar Calls for a Longer OTT Window to Boost Theatre Footfalls

Veteran filmmaker Gunasekhar, known for blockbusters like Okkadu and Chudalani Vundhi, has waded into the ongoing debate about OTT release windows in the Telugu film industry. The director advocated for a three-month gap between theatrical release and OTT premieres, arguing that such a move could help revive dwindling footfall in theatres.
Speaking at a recent media interaction, Gunasekhar said shorter OTT windows have conditioned audiences to wait for digital releases instead of watching movies in theatres. He suggested that a single three-month OTT window for all films could encourage audiences to return to theatres.
His comments come at a crucial time when participants and manufacturers are debating standard OTT timelines. Recent meetings at the Film Room have seen proposals ranging from eight weeks to three months, with stakeholders trying to arrive at a balanced approach.
Gunasekhar’s perspective is also influenced by the performance of his last film Euphoria, which failed at the box office despite receiving some positive reviews. He believes that the increasing dependence on OTT platforms has changed viewer behavior significantly.
The debate also underlines an important fact. Today’s audiences decide whether to watch a movie based largely on promotional material, and if the movie fails to generate excitement, they may skip the cinema experience altogether.
While discussions continue, the industry’s final decision regarding OTT windows could have a lasting impact on the balance between theatrical exhibition and digital release.
