Woman airlifted with serious injuries after shark attack at Sydney beach

A 30-year-old woman was attacked by a shark off the coast of Sydney on Saturday and was taken to hospital with serious injuries, the latest in a series of recent shark attacks off the coast of Australia.
Emergency crews responded to Coogee Beach on Saturday morning following reports that a swimmer had been bitten, authorities said.
In the statement made by the police, it was stated that the woman was taken to the hospital for treatment.
Police said, “The woman was taken out of the water by citizens who provided first aid.”

Authorities said the woman suffered serious injuries to her arm and leg.
Coogee Beach and two nearby beaches were closed following the attack.
The incident comes amid a recent spate of deadly shark attacks across Australia.

Last week, authorities said a 35-year-old fisherman was killed by a suspicious shark about 15 meters long off the coast of Western Australia.
The man was spearfishing near Michaelmas Island, a sheltered sandbank near Albany.
On May 24, 39-year-old Michael Jensz was killed after suffering fatal injuries during a suspected bull shark attack while spearfishing on the Great Barrier Reef.

Just days earlier, on May 16, 38-year-old Steve Mattabonni had been killed in a suspected great white shark attack near Rottnest Island, a popular tourist destination off the coast of Western Australia.
Earlier this year, a 12-year-old boy also died in a shark attack in Sydney Harbour.
Dozens of beaches on Australia’s east coast were temporarily closed in January after four shark attacks were reported over a two-day period.
Authorities said heavy rain created murky water conditions, which reduced visibility while attracting sharks.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, there are an average of 20 shark attacks every year in Australia.
