George will retire as the Army’s 41st Chief of Staff, effective immediately. The War Department is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement.”

Gen. Randy George previously served as senior military assistant to Lloyd Austin from 2021-2011 during the Joe Biden administration.

After decades of service, he first fought in the First Gulf War and later served in the recent conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The army chief of staff role is generally designed to be a four-year appointment.

George joined in 2023, meaning he will remain in office until 2027.
