NYC Mayor Mamdani faces backlash over free bus funding roadblocks

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is facing backlash online after admitting that his campaign pledge to make city buses free had overcome funding hurdles.

Mamdani’s office said in a statement to Fox News Digital that the mayor remains committed to the plan, adding that his administration is working with state officials to make free buses a reality before the end of his term.

“Mayor Mamdani is committed to providing fast and free buses when he leaves office,” a spokesperson said, noting ongoing talks with NY Governor Kathy Hochul’s office.

“In the meantime, the Mamdani administration will continue to work with our partners at the state and local levels to make commutes faster and our public transportation system more affordable for all New Yorkers.”

Mamdani never explicitly promised to deliver on his campaign platform in the first year, but he has said he plans to achieve that goal by the end of his first four-year term.

“Making buses fast and free is the fast thing we have already started,” Mamdani said in January. he said. “And what I’m saying is, when I’m done being mayor, they’re going to be free. But what we need to deliver this year is a balanced budget for this fiscal year, which is what the law requires, but also what just being a good mayor requires.” [and for] next fiscal year.”

As a councilman, Mamdani launched a free bus pilot program in Queens that he praised as highly successful, citing a more than 30% increase in ridership and a nearly 40% drop in attacks on bus operators.

Still, Mamdani’s critics argue that the cost of free buses is financially risky and logistically flawed for the giant New York City system, and warn that it will likely deteriorate the service he aims to improve.

The debate comes as Mamdani pushes a broader affordability agenda built on campaign promises such as council-owned grocery stores and rent freezes. Wall Street and was subject to harsh criticism.
