Israeli authorities arrested a 22-year-old Haifa resident for his involvement in an Iran-backed assassination plot against a senior Israeli official, according to reports. The target is believed to be former Prime Minister Naftali Bennett.
Ami Gaydarov, 22, was arrested last month on suspicion of working with an Iranian agent to gather intelligence and make a bomb to be used in a terrorist plot against a senior Israeli official. Gaydarov was unaware of the target’s identity. The gag ban on his arrest was recently lifted, allowing Israeli media outlets to report on the incident.
Authorities said Gaydarov first contacted his Iranian handler in August 2025 and was paid about $23,000, mostly in cryptocurrency, to perform tasks in preparation for the assassination plot.
Gaydarov allegedly rented an apartment in the city center to serve as a laboratory for bombs.
