12-Year-Old Girl Collapses At KGBV, Dies; Probe Ordered, 4 Staff Suspended

The death of a 12-year-old girl studying at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) under suspicious circumstances sparked protests from parents and led to the suspension of four staff members, including the principal.
The late Mylapalli Navya, a Class 7 student from Pudimadaka village in Anakapalli district, reportedly fainted in the early hours of Saturday.
According to officials and local sources, the hostel staff informed his father Raju, who had to travel around 15 km from Pudimadaka to go to school. Allegedly, the staff waited for the girl’s arrival instead of immediately taking her to the hospital.
On reaching school, the father took his daughter on a motorcycle to a nearby private hospital, spending around ₹20,000, and then took her to NTR Hospital in Anakapalli. He was pronounced dead around 9.30am, reportedly due to a heart attack.
While the parents initially suspected snake or bee bites, doctors said no such traces were found. Following a complaint to the Achutapuram police, an autopsy was ordered.
The incident sparked protests with villagers staging a dharna at the school, alleging negligence on the part of the staff. They alleged that staff did not take immediate action to transport the girl to the hospital. They also claimed that the hostel building was overgrown with bushes and littered with garbage and snakes were seen several times.
Following the incident, district education officer G. Apparao Naidu suspended four staff, including principal Vidyalay Uma Devi and in-house ANO, and ordered an investigation.
Paravada DSP Mohan Rao and inspector Chandrasekhar visited the school and conducted a preliminary investigation. “The exact cause of death can only be determined after the autopsy report is received,” the inspector said.
