Liverpool v PSG: Reds can do special things against PSG in Champions League says Arne Slot

Arne Slot says his Liverpool side still believe they can do something special against Paris St-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday.

PSG drew two goals clear at Anfield after a convincing win in Paris last week, but Slot was adamant the Reds could pull off a comeback for the ages.

Liverpool, who managed to score two or more goals in the first European away match, were able to progress in only two of the 13 matches (against Auxerre in 1991 and Barcelona in 2019).

Slot said, “We managed to score two or more goals 36 times in the last 50 home matches. Yes, we do not play PSG in any of our home matches, but the opponents we face in the Premier League and Champions League are very strong.”

“Yes, there is a belief that we can do special things, but at the same time we need to be very, very special because we are playing against the champions of Europe, which makes the task more complicated but not impossible,” he added.

And Slot asked Anfield fans to inspire his side, just as Liverpool had played their part in coming from behind to emphatically knock out Galatasaray in the previous round.

“Them [the fans] “It will be as important as our performance,” he said.

“I think we have to be much better than last week and their players are experienced and have experienced Anfield a year ago. [when they went through on penalties].

“They know what’s going to happen, so I hope our fans find it an extra boost compared to last year when the atmosphere was incredible.

“But I think our fans are ready for it and I think I can trust them. [to be] “It’s even louder than last season.”

Asked where this belief came from, with Slot admitting they were “lucky” to only lose 2-0, given Liverpool’s poor nature in France last week when they failed to get a shot on target, the Dutchman emphasized that it showed how much better his team could have played.

“Do you want one example, two, 10 or 200? After the first half at the Etihad [in the 4-0 FA Cup defeat against Manchester City] “Did you expect City to be 3 goals ahead after 20 minutes of the second half?” said Slot.

“We could have scored 8 or 9 goals at home against Galatasaray, so obviously we showed that we can be much better than we were at PSG.

“One goal could change the momentum going from negative at the Etihad to positive on Saturday [against Fulham] At Anfield.”
