Multiple Kansas City area schools to dismiss early as severe storms loom

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Many school districts in the metro are dismissing students early Friday. Severe storm threatens the region.

School districts announced the early dismissal schedule after monitoring forecasts calling for thunderstorms with the possibility of high winds, large hail and tornadoes.

Districts including Kansas City Public Schools, Lee’s Summit, Independence, Blue Springs, Excelsior Springs, Raymore-Peculiar, Raytown, Grain Valley, Harrisonville, Fort Osage, Hickman Mills, Belton and Baldwin City have announced early dismissals due to impending severe weather.

Here is the revised schedule for Kansas City Public Schools:

  • Tier 1 Schools – 10:50

  • Tier 2 Schools – 11:50

  • Tier 3 Schools – 12:45

All after-school events and programs scheduled for today, including LINC, are cancelled.

Lee’s Summit R-7 School District’s corrected schedule is as follows:

  • Leave work at 11:50: LSHS, LSN, LSW, SRA

  • Check out at 12:15: CCE, HHE, HPE, TRE

  • Check out at 12:45: BCMS, PLMS, SLMS, ETMS

  • Check out at 12:55: PVE

  • Check out at 13.40: Pre-K, GWE, HGE, LFE, LSE, MAE, MLE, PLE, RHE, SPE, SVE, UWE, WLE, WVE

Buses will also operate according to the determined schedule. The district said decisions about after-school activities will be announced after further weather monitoring.

At Independence, dismissal hours will vary earlier than each school’s normal schedule:

  • Schools, which usually close at 14.55 in the afternoon, will now be closed at 12.25.

  • Schools, which were closed at 15.50 in the afternoon, will now be closed at 13.20.

  • Schools that closed at 16.35 will now open at 14.05.

Bus routes in Independence will operate as usual. Students who do not take the bus must be picked up by their parents or guardians. The district says the day will still count as a full attendance day.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more schools adjust their schedules.
