PM Modi flays Opposition for women’s quota bill defeat

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday lashed out at the opposition for ensuring the defeat of legislation aimed at expediting the implementation of restrictions on women in the Lok Sabha and Assemblies by limiting them and increasing the number of seats in the lower house of Parliament.

In his special address to the nation, he blamed the Congress, DMK, Trinamool Congress and Samajwadi Party for the “evil killer” effect of the Constitution amendment bill aimed at empowering women, but also assured that women’s reservations would come to light.

Modi accused the Congress of being anti-reform and creating obstruction to any progressive program initiated by his government for the welfare of the people. He also targeted the DMK and Trinamool Congress, which are in power in poll-bound Tamil Nadu and West Bengal, as well as the Samajwadi Party, for “putting their parties above national interests”.

He claimed that parties opposing the law would have to face the consequences as the women of the country would never forgive them. “The opposition will definitely suffer for the sin of opposing women’s reservation,” he said.

The Prime Minister expressed his regret that the bill was not passed and underlined that every woman will feel the pain of this situation. He added that seeing leaders opposing the bill would invite anger from women.

‘Anti-Reform’

Modi alleged that these parties were spreading lies on the delimitation issue and engaging in divisive politics. He said the Congress had learned the “divide and rule” methods from the British and continued to implement them. He underlined that the accusation that some states have lost their power in the Lok Sabha due to delimitation is misplaced and that it has been clearly stated that the increase in seats will be proportionate. Also Read |’Dreams crushed’, ‘selfish politics’ and ‘we will come back’: Highlights from Modi’s speech after Lok Sabha rejects women’s reservation amendment bill

“Parties opposing the changes in Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam are taking women’s power for granted… The main reason for opposing this law is the fear of family-based parties that their leadership will be threatened if women are empowered. They will never want women outside their families to grow up,” he said.

Recalling the developments in the Lok Sabha, where the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill was put to vote a day ago, the Prime Minister said that when the bill was rejected, Congress members, DMK, TMC and SP were seen clapping and punching the tables. “What they did was not just pounding tables, but also attacking women’s dignity and self-respect,” she said.

He assured all women in the country that his government would strive to remove all obstacles in the passage of reservations for women. “No party that opposes women’s reservation will be able to stop the increasing participation of women in Parliament and state legislatures.”

Modi said, “By opposing this bill, the Congress has once again proven that it is an anti-reform party. The anti-reform attitude of the Congress has always caused great harm to the country. The generations of this country have borne the brunt of all opposition, indecision and deceit of the Congress.”

He also alleged that the Congress hated the issue of women’s reservation and was always conspiring to prevent it. He added that every time an attempt was made to give reservation to women, the Congress stopped it and this time the mask came off and revealed its true face.

Listing out the issues that the Congress has opposed since the NDA came to power, the Prime Minister said that these include the abrogation of Article 370, the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the fight against Maoist violence. “Congress is busy with lies, creating confusion and sweeping problems under the carpet. India has not reached the height it should have because of Congress’ policy of delaying, creating obstacles, misleading people,” he said.
