Carney says Canada’s U.S. ties have become ‘weaknesses’

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has suggested that many of his country’s previous “strengths” resulting from its close relationship with the United States have become “weaknesses” that need to be addressed.

“The United States has fundamentally changed its approach to trade by raising tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression. Many of our former strengths, based on our close ties to America, have become weaknesses, weaknesses that we must correct,” Carney said in a video message. he said.

The Canadian leader said, “Workers in our automotive, steel and lumber sectors, which are most affected by US tariffs, are under threat. Businesses are withdrawing investments due to the cloud of uncertainty that covers us all. The USA has changed. And we must respond to it.”

Carney continued: “This is about taking back control of our security, our borders and our future. There are those who say there is no need for a comprehensive plan. They believe we should wait it out in the hope that the United States will return to normal and the good old days will return.”
