India Calls For Global Financing Reform At UN

new York : India on Monday called for comprehensive reforms in global financial reforms at the ‘2026 ECOSOC Forum General Debate’ and the United Nations Security Council, stressing the need to better reflect the aspirations of the Global South during key debates at the UN Headquarters.

Underlining the structural challenges in global development financing, India emphasized the urgent need for systemic reforms.
“The Secretary (West) underlined the need for a fair, inclusive and development-oriented global financial system to close the $4 trillion SDG financing gap. He also emphasized that reforming IFIs, strengthening the voice of the Global South and deploying digital public infrastructure are key to meeting the Seville Commitment.”
In a separate meeting, India also pressed for long-pending reforms of the United Nations Security Council during the Intergovernmental Negotiations (IGN) meeting at the UN.
“Secretary (West) @AmbSibiGeorged presented the national declaration at the IGN meeting on @UN Security Council reforms at UN headquarters,” the post said.
India emphasized that the current structure of the Security Council does not adequately represent developing countries, especially in terms of permanent membership.
“He emphasized the need for greater representation of the Global South, especially in the permanent category. He highlighted the similarities between India’s approach to UN Security Council reforms and the African model,” the post said.
Earlier, India underlined its ongoing engagement with the United Nations with a particular focus on UN peacekeeping issues during a high-level interaction between MEA Secretary (West) Sibi George and Khaled Khiari, Under-Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific in the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations at the UN headquarters in New York.

Sibi George met with Khaled Khiari, where both sides had “productive discussions” on various issues. The discussion particularly highlighted cooperation in UN Peacekeeping, an area in which India has made significant contributions. According to UN India’s official website, India is among the largest and most consistent troop contributors to UN peacekeeping, with more than 275,000 Indian personnel serving under the UN flag since 1948.
