During the campaign, Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., faced Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner in Maine; This Platner has been under fire for having a tattoo seen as a Nazi symbol and saying he is “his own man”, among other controversies.

CNBC host Sara Eisen pressed Warren about her support for Platner on “Squawk on the Street” Wednesday: “This is a guy with a tattoo on his chest with a Nazi symbol. OK, he apologized for that. This is a guy who reportedly wrote that people worried about rape should take some responsibility for themselves and not get so fed up that they have sex with someone they don’t want. He reportedly praised military tactics used by Hamas in online comments, and when they read that, he read Israeli soldiers.” “He’s killing it, so I’m wondering why you think he’s your type of guy?”

Warren responded, “So, as you noted, he apologized. He meets with the people of Maine every day so they can evaluate who Graham Platner is today, not who Graham Platner was.”

The Liberal senator went on to explain the content of his comment, initially saying he didn’t know anything about Platner.

“I’m reading an interview with him and he asked me: ‘When did you first realize the game was rigged?’ And it’s reminiscent of the crash of 2008, where 10 million families lost their homes, 8 million people lost their jobs, millions of people lost their savings, and the big banks cheated people, non-bank financial institutions cheated them, stole their homes, and Graham Platner’s response when he knew the game was rigged was when not a single banker went to jail. So I said, ‘That’s my kind of guy,'” Warren said.

Eisen backtracked further and asked if Democrats wanted to be the “party of inclusion.”

“I want to be a party that stands up for hard-working people,” Warren said. “I want to be a party that transforms an economy that is currently mired in corruption and an economy that works for a handful of billionaires and multi-multimillionaires and doesn’t work for most others. I want us to be a party that really cuts costs and expands opportunity. And that’s what Graham Platner wants to do. And I’m there to stand with him and help in that fight.”

Warren joined Platner in Portland, Maine, on Saturday, and Platner said he was “his own kind of guy.”

Maine’s Democratic primary is set for June 9, and Platner is trying to unseat Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the general election in November. Platner is running against Maine Governor Janet Mills.

Platner’s past controversies became political fodder for the Mills campaign; including directing voters to decade-old Reddit posts in which he appeared to blame sexual assault victims and defend Hamas’ military actions, among other messages from 2013 and 2014. Platner was also criticized for having a chest tattoo recognized as a Nazi symbol, for which he later apologized and covered it up.
