IKEA announces major change to UK stores after 25 years | UK | News

IKEA has confirmed plans to partially scrap a popular range a quarter of a century after its launch. The Swedish retailer’s MALM range of storage units and bedroom products has become a defining feature of its homeware collection since its launch in 2002. However, parts of the furniture range will be removed from branches across IKEA’s global portfolio from this summer, with all stocks to be eliminated by 2027.

An IKEA spokesperson said: “We know our products carry real and special meaning in homes around the world, and we’re committed to meeting people in ways that reflect how they live today. As part of this commitment, parts of the MALM range will be phased out globally as we introduce more choices built around people’s preferences and needs today.”

Items to be phased out include bedside tables, bed frames and many, but not all, of the MALM series dressing tables and dressers.

Kim Chin-Sung, market manager for IKEA Croydon, said: “We first opened IKEA Croydon in 1992 and the way people shop has changed since then.

“At IKEA, we believe that our physical stores have a vital role to play as a shopping destination and in inspiring customers.

“The new Decathalon unit coming to IKEA Croydon is the latest example of us investing in and redesigning our stores to ensure our customers and colleagues continue to get the most out of these spaces.”

Monica Cedres, Decathlon UK London City Director, added: “We have been looking forward to this day and after a real team effort we can’t wait to finally get in on the action with our neighbors at IKEA.

“The aim of this partnership is to make living an active lifestyle as easy as going to IKEA. Croydon is a vibrant borough and whether you’re looking for technical help with PB or just picking up your home and sports equipment in one go, we’re ready to help South London discover the joy of being active together.”
