Indo-Nepal border: ₹20 crore narcotics bust in UP’s Maharajganj, SSB arrests Bihar man

Sashastra Seema Bal arrested a man near the Indo-Nepal border in Maharajganj district of Uttar Pradesh and seized over 327 kg of marijuana worth over Rs 20 billion, officials told PTI on Sunday.

Acting on specific information, an SSB team arrested Ranjeet Giri, a resident of Gopalpur in Bihar, on Sunday morning and seized a large quantity of marijuana from his possession, SSB Deputy Commandant Dinesh Chandra Biswas told PTI.

Authorities said another member of the group managed to escape during the operation, and efforts to track and arrest him were continuing.

According to the SSB, Giri allegedly procured the contraband from Nepal and transported it in a truck. He is suspected of supplying drugs to the area.


The value of the seized narcotic substance in the international market is estimated to be around 20 million rupees. After his first interrogation, the suspect was taken to the Narcotics Branch Directorate.
Investigators suspect Giri is acting as a carrier for a larger network and continue to question him to gather more details. A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, officials said.(With inputs from PTI)
