Residents evacuated as bomb squad descends on Oldham street | UK | News

Residents were evacuated as bomb squads removed “a number of items” from a property in Oldham on Sunday, April 26.

The incident occurred shortly before noon on Chew Brook Drive in the Greenfield area, where a cordon was put in place and homes were evacuated as a precaution. The Women’s 1st XI match at nearby Greenfield Cricket Club was postponed after spectators were told not to attend.

Manchester Police confirmed that “a number of items” were later removed from a property by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit and sent for assessment as residents were able to return to their homes. No further details regarding the items in question have been confirmed, Manchester Evening News reported.

Chief Inspector Ian Partington, from GMP, said: “Today we would like to thank residents for their patience and co-operation as we carry out our investigations alongside our partners at EOD and the fire service.”

Greenfield Cricket Club wrote in an online statement: “Due to an ongoing incident on Chew Brook Drive, there is currently a 100 meter exclusion zone in place. Emergency services are currently on duty.

“Therefore, today’s match has been postponed and the police have instructed the public not to go to the cricket ground and park. In the meantime, we will use our social media accounts to announce the developments. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.”

Crews from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service were also in attendance and “worked closely with police, Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) teams and other agencies to ensure public safety”.

A 100-metre exclusion zone was established while emergency services were at the scene. The incident lasted approximately 4 hours and the cordon was lifted around 16:00.
