NIA Takes Over Bengal Crude Bomb Recovery Case, Probes Terror Link

New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Monday took over a case related to the seizure of crude bombs in West Bengal and started its investigation keeping in mind the terrorism angle. The counter-terrorism agency registered a fresh First Information Report (RC-25/2026/NIA/DLI) early on Monday, a day after receiving orders from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

“Under the MHA order, NIA has taken over and registered a case related to the recovery of crude bombs in West Bengal. The case relates to the recovery by Kolkata police of 79 crude bombs and other incriminating material, which were stored at one point on April 25, thereby endangering human life and property. NIA registered the case on April 26,” NIA said in a statement on Monday. he said.

The case dated April 25 (FIR No. 62/2026) was first registered at the Uttar Kashipur Police Station in Kolkata’s Bhangar division. The FIR was lodged under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023 and relevant provisions of the Explosive Substances Act, 1908, after credible inputs about the storage of crude bombs and the materials used in their preparation.

Acting on information, the state police seized 79 round shaped objects tied with jute ropes, suspected to be crude bombs, along with other incriminating materials. These explosives were allegedly stored by unidentified persons in an abandoned house near a graveyard in Majherhat (Poilepara) village under Uttar Kashipur police station in South 24 Parganas district.

The MHA considered that the case involved a “scheduled offence” under the National Investigation Agency Act 2008. Officials stated that the illegal storage and transportation of explosives poses a serious threat to public safety and property, with the potential to spread fear and terror among citizens. Considering the seriousness of the crime, possible national security implications and the need to unravel a larger conspiracy, the MHA, on the night of April 25, directed the NIA to take over. probe.

The MHA, in its directive issued under Section 6(5) along with Section 8 of the NIA Act, 2008, has authorized the NIA to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the matter.
