The attorney general announced that Secret Service agents fired five shots at the man who tried to assassinate Donald Trump but failed to hit him, and may have accidentally shot one of their own.

Agents only subdued the alleged gunman, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, after he tripped and fell while violating a security checkpoint at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Todd Blanche told reporters Monday.

‘A Secret Service officer was shot in the chest but was wearing a useful ballistic vest,’ the attorney general said.

‘This heroic officer who was shot fired five times at Allen, who was not hit but fell to the ground and was immediately arrested.’

When asked if Allen fired the shot that hit the manager, Blanche said he could not confirm it.

Blanche confirmed that the police officer did not suffer serious injuries because he was wearing a bulletproof vest.

Despite missing every shot, Blanche praised the Secret Service: ‘Law enforcement did not fail. They did exactly what they were trained to do.’

The Justice Department has indicted Allen on three federal charges, including attempting to assassinate the President of the United States. Allen faces life in prison if convicted.
