President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania welcomed the King and Queen to the United States on Monday, with their state visit in full swing this morning.
King Charles and Queen Camilla have a busy schedule for their second day in Washington, DC, which includes a bilateral meeting with the president, his address to Congress and a formal state dinner.
The King, who will give a historic speech to Congress at 15:00, is expected to emphasize the long history and common democratic values of the two countries during his speech, in order to help strengthen the special relations between the UK and the USA, which have been under serious tension in recent months.
Following the White House visit, the royal family is expected to visit the residence of the British Ambassador in Washington and attend a garden party there.
On Tuesday, the royal family is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting, possibly in the Oval Office. They will also be welcomed back to the White House and inspect some US soldiers.
Later in the day, the royal family is expected to address Congress in a joint session; This marks the second time a British monarch has done this. Queen Elizabeth was first in line during her visit in 1991.
After ending up in D.C., the royal couple will head to New York to commemorate the victims of 9/11, then to Virginia to celebrate the 250th anniversary of America’s independence.
The visit is the most significant foreign trip of the King’s reign so far, but is now accompanied by growing security concerns following an assassination attempt on the president at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday.
