Israel warns British anti-semitism is out of control and protesters brand PM ‘Keir Starmer, Jew harmer’ after bloodbath on streets of Golders Green left two hurt: Wave of hate is ‘national emergency’ and empty words aren’t enough, Labour told

Keir Starmer has warned that antisemitism is a ‘national emergency’ after another terror attack in the heart of Britain’s Jewish community.

Israel told the Prime Minister that he “can no longer claim that this is under control” after a knifeman stabbed two Jewish men in broad daylight.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis demanded ‘meaningful action’ and Donald Trump’s anti-Semitic czar said ‘enough is enough’ after the attack.

Shortly before lunch, fear gripped Golders Green, North London, as 34-year-old Shloime Rand was stabbed in the chest, narrowly missing her vital organs.

Minutes later, 76-year-old Moshe Shine was stabbed in the neck at a bus stop 400 meters away.

Met Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said the 45-year-old suspect, who had a history of ‘serious violence and mental health issues’, was eventually detained by Jewish community watchdog Shomrim, along with police.

Graphic footage shows officers using stun guns to subdue him after he tries to stab them.

The Mail understands that the suspect, a Somali-born British national, is also known under the Government’s Counter Radicalisation programme.

Last night Mr Rand’s relatives and Mr Shine’s friends said the men were recovering in hospital and medical staff were doing well.

But while the US administration has contacted Mr Rand, a joint US-UK citizen, and is said to have briefed the President, his family has said the British Government has not been in contact.

Mr Rand’s sister, who wished to remain anonymous, told the Daily Mail: “I have reached out to the UK Government myself but have still not heard from anyone.” and added that his brother was one centimeter away from death.

The attack sparked outrage in the Government yesterday, with angry locals chanting “Starmer out” at the scene, following a series of anti-Semitic attacks in the area. Sir Mark was also plagued by boos and shouts of ‘resign’ and ‘shame on you’.

Protesters chanted slogans such as ‘Keir Starmer, Jew destroyer’ and ‘Shame on Sadiq Khan’.

This incident comes just a month after four Jewish community ambulances were set on fire a stone’s throw away in yesterday’s attack linked to an Iranian terrorist group.

On Monday, an arson attack was carried out on a monument to Iranian protesters, one street away from the stabbing, and there were further attacks on Jewish people in Slough and Watford last week.

Jonathan Hall, the independent reviewer of terrorism legislation, has warned that anti-Semitic attacks are the ‘biggest national security emergency since Covid’.

Opposition leader Kemi Badenoch said: ‘The Jewish people in our country are under constant attack. This is no longer a growing model.

‘There is an epidemic of violence against the Jewish people.

‘This is now a national emergency and must be treated as such by the Government and public authorities.’

He added: ‘I’m not the police chief, I’m not the Prime Minister, but I can see there are some things fueling this and we need to drain the swamp.’

The Jewish community demanded an end to the hate marches that are now frequently seen in London and ‘zero tolerance for all forms of anti-Semitism’ on university campuses.

The anger was further fueled by political leaders making predictable statements sharing their ‘concerns’ without any clear plan of action.

Sir Keir, who held a Cobra meeting yesterday, told the House of Commons: ‘This is of deep concern to everyone in this House.

‘There is currently a police investigation and I think we all need to do everything we can to support that investigation.’

He said he would visit the scene ‘as soon as possible’ and condemned the ‘appalling attack’.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood vowed the Government would ‘pull every nerve’ to keep Jewish people safe, while London mayor Sir Sadiq Khan shared his anger and offered support, adding: ‘There should be absolutely no place for antisemitism in society.’

There was also anger at Green Party leader Zack Polanski, who suggested just last week that fears of anti-Semitic attacks might be a ‘perception of mistrust’ rather than ‘actual mistrust’.

While the attack was taking place yesterday, the Government was announcing that it would once again hold consultations on anti-Semitism.

As news broke of the stabbing, a press release was sent out calling for ‘pupils, parents and teachers to share their experiences of antisemitism’ for an independent investigation.

Responding angrily, Israel’s foreign ministry shared graphic video footage of the attacks showing Mr Shine being stabbed at a bus stop, saying: ‘Enough words.’

He wrote of X: ‘After attacks on synagogues, Jewish institutions, community ambulances and now the targeting of Jews in Golders Green, the UK Government can no longer claim to have this under control.

‘Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s statements are no substitute for confronting the roots of growing anti-Semitism in the UK.

‘British Jews should not need security patrols and emergency volunteers to live openly as Jews. Enough words. The UK must act decisively and urgently.’

Benjamin Netanyahu’s office added: ‘Weakness illuminates one anti-Semitic attack after another in London. Words are not enough to face this trouble.

‘We demand and expect the British Government to take action to protect Jews in Britain and to bring anti-Semites to justice.’

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim added: ‘Following the anti-Semitic stabbing of two Jews on the streets of Golders Green this morning, words of condemnation are no longer enough.

‘This must be a moment that requires meaningful action from every institution, every community, every leader and every respected person in our country.’

The King last night said he was ‘deeply concerned’ for the Jewish community and sent his ‘thoughts and prayers’ to the victims and praised those who ‘selfishly came to their aid’.

The Community Security Trust said it would ‘further increase security measures’ in the coming days. Manchester police are also increasing patrols.
