House Republican on Comey indictment ‘There’s something called dangerous speak’

Rep. Dan Meuser (R-Pa.) criticized former FBI Director James Comey on Tuesday after he was indicted by a grand jury in a new case filed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) for the second time.

The new lawsuit relates to a social media post Comey made last year in which seashells in the sand were arranged to form the numbers 86 and 47.

“Hey, look, you know, the former FBI director is writing 86-47 in the sand, which means kill the 47th president, which is alarming. So, do you see what the intent is? Do you know anything, Blake? There’s such a thing as dangerous speech. Dangerous speech means worse than hate speech,” Meuser told NewsNation’s Blake Burman on “The Hill.”

“What that means is that it arouses in others the desire to commit violent acts. And what James Comey has come up with is, yes, that can certainly be interpreted as committing violent acts,” he added.

Last May, Comey published a photo of seashells on a beach set up to display the numbers 86-47. President Trump, the 47th President, said at the time that this was a call for his death.

“He knew exactly what that meant. A kid knows what that means. If you’re the FBI director and you don’t know what that means, it meant assassination. And he says it loud and clear,” Trump told Fox News last year.

According to the indictment, Comey faces two charges for allegedly threatening the president via seashell mail.

The indictment states, “The defendant, James Brien Comey Jr., knowingly and willfully threatened to take the life of the President of the United States and cause bodily harm to him.”
