UK furniture giant collapses into administration – family business since 1969 | UK | News

A home furnishings store has announced “with a heavy heart” that it is shutting its doors after 57 years of trading. Barretts of Woodbridge, the family-run furniture store based in Thoroughfare in Woodbridge, Suffolk, which was opened in 1969 by couple Ann and Jacket Barrett with the help of their friend and investor Charles Gill, will cease trading on May 7.
Their daughter, Jill Barrett, who took over management of the business, said changing shopping habits and rising bills contributed to the store’s financial woes. “Barrett’s sales have not kept pace with rising costs in recent years, leading to the unfortunate situation we are currently in,” he said. “We have thoroughly enjoyed running Barretts and would like to thank the local community and our friends and colleagues for their continued support. “To everyone who helps make Barretts special, we will always remember you. They were all amazing and we offer you our deepest gratitude.”
The announcement comes after Rightmove named Woodbridge the happiest place to live in England; locals described it as “wonderful” and an attractive day out for tourists in 2024.
But despite these comments remaining the same, “shopping habits have undoubtedly changed”, Ms Barret said.
“Uptown retail parks have made shopping easy and attractive, and online shopping continues to dominate the market.”
Barretts of Woodbridge, described by Companies House as a business selling furniture, lighting and similar products, said all outstanding orders would be fulfilled and delivered despite the business being closed.
