A queue of hundreds of excited customers was seen stretching the length of the street in a UK city as a new destination prepared to open this morning. Many high street chains have announced expansions across the UK as others close stores, giving shoppers something to look forward to. One of the newest arrivals was a hobby shop that opened in Norwich on Saturday morning (May 2) and there was a huge queue.
Cosplay enthusiasts were seen dressing up as characters from their favorite comics and games as the new Forbidden Planet store opened on St Stephen Street in the city centre. The new store has opened in the former Brighthouse unit. The chain, which already has a number of stores in cities across the UK, sells products related to popular sci-fi series, cult entertainment memorabilia and pop culture figurines. The store opened at 10 in the morning, but queues started to form from 8 in the morning.
“We’re opening the doors to our brand new store with a big celebration for Norwich’s pop culture enthusiasts,” the chain said in an announcement to customers.
“You have to visit us on May 2nd as we offer endless comics, manga, action figures, Funko figurines, plushies, trading cards, Pop Mart gifts, merchandise and much more!”
local broadcast Eastern Daily Press Some fans reportedly set up chairs to camp as early as 1 a.m. A woman dressed as the Joker said she had already waited two and a half hours when she got to the middle of the queue.
“The queue is constant. This morning it is never ending. 55 people are allowed into the store at a time,” one local resident told the publication.
There were many offers to celebrate the opening today. Those who wore cosplay received a 10% discount on their purchases, while the first 100 customers received a free gift bag.
Forbidden Planet is the world’s largest and best-known retailer of science fiction, fantasy and cult entertainment and the largest stockist of the latest comics and graphic novels in the UK. It has several stores in London, as well as locations in Liverpool, Cambridge, Newcastle, Coventry and Southampton.
There are a total of 18 Forbidden Planet stores in the UK and Ireland. A spokesperson for Forbidden Planet said: “The energy this morning is out of this world! Thank you so much to everyone who queued up. You all look amazing.”
