A wave of disruption has hit the UK automotive retail sector, with many major dealership groups and independent operators either closing their sites or going into administration. Thousands of jobs are now being lost or put on hold as the industry grapples with changing consumer demand, rising costs and the shift to electric vehicles.

The best-known casualty was London giant Cargiant, which closed its 50-acre retail operation on April 24, putting 500 jobs at risk. Meanwhile, the effects of Cazoo’s collapse continue to ripple across the industry, with nearly 900 roles eliminated. Industry giants are not immune either, with Lookers embarking on a major redundancy program affecting 650 staff following its recent takeover.

Cargiant – 500 jobs

Location: White City, West London.

Reason for closure: The world’s largest independent retailer entered a “managed closure” of its retail operations in April 2026. Directors cited a lack of business sustainability due to high operating costs and a “structural problem” in the supply of used cars, particularly the 2021-2023 semiconductor shortage, which has led to a reduction of three-year-old vehicles on the market.

Additionally, the land value for development of the 46 acres of land near the new HS2 interchange far exceeded the profits from car sales.

Job losses: The entire retail workforce is affected, with essential operations ceasing on April 24, 2026.

Cazoo – 700 jobs

Location: Nationwide (Headquarters in London; many Customer Centers closed).

After years of multimillion-pound losses, Cazoo has gone into administration to transition from an online retailer to a pure marketplace model. The “Amazon of cars” experiment failed due to the high costs of maintaining inventory and shipping vehicles across the country.

The administration process over the past two years has led to the sale of repair centers and the closure of physical collection centers in cities such as Birmingham and Bristol.

Job losses: The first loss of over 700 roles. Only a core team of approximately 200 people was retained to transition to the marketplace.

Seekers – 950 jobs

Location: Nationwide (head offices in Altrincham; sites across the UK).

Lookers has undergone a major restructuring following its acquisition by Global Auto Holdings. Reasons for the current layoffs and facility threats include the closure of underperforming divisions in the Ford and Volkswagen networks to improve profitability, as well as a “centralization” strategy in which accounting and back-office functions are shifted to India.

Job losses:Northern Ireland subsidiary Charles Hurst has 650 sales staff, 200 head offices and 100 staff.

Group 1 Automotive – 200 jobs

Location: Multiple sites across the UK (including London and various regional centres).

This US-owned giant launched “personnel and discretionary expense reductions” in early 2026. The group is ditching low-margin dealerships, including Volkswagen and Skoda sites, while exiting representation of the Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) brand to focus on more profitable partnerships with emerging Chinese EV makers such as Geely.

Job losses: Significant disruptions linked to branch sales and exits from JLR facility in early 2026.

Essex Car Group – 4 jobs

Location: Dunmow, Essex.

This prestigious independent retailer went into liquidation in March 2026. Financial records revealed creditors’ liabilities of more than £1.5 million against modest reserves.

The company was struggling with debt and high share costs, leading to the appointment of insolvency practitioners to wind down the business after almost a decade of trading.

Job losses: Small team of experts, all of whom were released in the liquidation in March 2026.

Carson Motors – up to 10 jobs

Location: Preston, Lancashire.

The business entered into Creditors’ Voluntary Liquidation in April 2026. Despite a history of positive customer reviews, the small independent dealer faced insurmountable cash flow problems unique to the current market, where high interest rates make it increasingly difficult for small companies to finance showroom inventories.

Job losses: Small independent team. All roles have come to an end, as the job ended last month.

CMS Vauxhall – 46 jobs

Location: Kidderminster, Worcestershire.

Reason for closure: This dealership went into administration after an unexplained “stock discrepancy” of £3.7 million was discovered in its accounts.

After failing to find a buyer to take over the operation, the facility was permanently closed and was recently earmarked for demolition to be replaced by a gas station and electric vehicle charging centre.

Job losses: Immediately following the share scandal, the majority of 46 staff were dismissed.

Stratstone Land Rover – 40 jobs

Location: Slough, Berkshire.

Reason for closure: As part of a “strategic regional restructuring”, Stratstone has permanently closed its leading Slough showroom. Parent company Pendragon (now part of Lithia Motors) is consolidating physical facilities into larger “regional centres” to reduce overheads, directing customers to its larger sites in Reading and Milton Keynes instead.

Job losses: Estimated impact for a large premium site with some regional staff offering relocation.

Loughton Tires – 5 jobs

Location: Loughton, Essex.

Reason for closure: Loughton Tires, a local staple since 1987, went into liquidation in April 2026. Although technically a Voluntary Liquidation of Members, the move marked the end of decades of service as the automotive industry shifted towards larger integrated service chains rather than small, specialized local garages.

Job losses: The small local service team has been affected by the liquidation of the 39-year-old firm.
