Stores of a famous British brewery are closing this month due to “wider operational difficulties”. Five Adnams stores are set to close at the end of May in a blow to local shoppers.

Adnams’ director of hospitality and retail, Nick Attfield, said the Suffolk-based brewery had taken the “difficult decision” to close its outlets after inspecting its retail property. He said: “This comes in light of ongoing cost pressures, wider operational challenges and changes in customer shopping habits, which are affecting the long-term sustainability of these locations.

“We recognize this will be distressing news for our colleagues and customers and our immediate priority is to support affected employees through a full consultation process.”

“We are extremely grateful for the dedication and professionalism shown by our store teams who represent Adnams with pride and commitment.” he added.

The stores to be closed are in Hadleigh in Suffolk, Norwich in Norfolk, Frinton-on-Sea and Saffron Walden in Essex and Stamford in Lincolnshire.

Despite the pending closures, Mr Attfield said Adnams remained committed to its retail presence and was exploring opportunities to open in locations that better meet customer demand.

Adnams was founded in the seaside town of Southwold in 1872 and continues to exist today.

The award-winning brewery is best known for its beers, but it also produces spirits.

Its products include Ghost Ship Pale Ale and Southwold Bitter.

In addition to shops, the brewery also has hotels, bars and inns.

Last year Adnams chief executive Jenny Hanlon said the brewery was taking a “bolder” approach to reducing debt.

After a semester of classes, he said he had a “razor-sharp focus” on improving profitability.
