A United Airlines jet came perilously close to disaster when it crashed into a semitrailer and utility pole on the New Jersey Turnpike as it was about to land at Newark Liberty International Airport.
“A major disaster was averted” [a few] “Feet,” said safety Steve Arroyo, who has landed on the same short track many times during his career at United.
“If it had been five feet lower, eight feet, so no more than 10 feet, that plane would have been all over the New Jersey Turnpike.”
The driver of the bakery distribution truck, who was slightly injured, was treated in the hospital. The Boeing 767 was flying from Venice, Italy, with 231 people on board and managed to land safely on Sunday (US time). No one on the plane was injured.
Air traffic control suggests the incident may have created a hole in the side of the plane, but the airline and the National Transportation Safety Board have not confirmed this.
The NTSB said today that it reclassified the incident as an accident due to the extent of damage to the plane, but did not provide any details.
Patrick Oyulu was among those on the toll road when the plane hit the truck. He released a short video showing the consequences of the collision as the plane touched down on the runway just beyond the highway.
Oyulu wrote to X: “The truck driver must have seen his life passing by.”
