Officer shot in eye during Texas ambush risks own life to save woman | News

A Civilian Response Unit member risked his life to save a woman who was shot in the eye during an ambush in Texas.

Edward Zapata, a 30-year-old Marine who joined the Fort Worth Police Department in February, was taking a carjacking report on April 28 when a gunman, identified as 39-year-old Angel Cantu, opened fire from across the street.

Zapata, who was hit in the eye by a piece of shrapnel, pushed the wound and took the woman to a safe place.

Responding police officers opened fire on Cantu before he fled, triggering a police manhunt that led to the lockdown of several schools.

He was eventually caught in a wooded area and now faces charges.
