Avi Yemini’s new party renews concerns about voting in Victoria

Former Israeli soldier and far-right commentator Avi Yemini recently announced that he was forming the “Free Palestine Party” with the aim of directing preferences towards “parties that want to liberate Palestine from Hamas”, that is, right-wing parties, including One Nation.

The provocateur’s plan has renewed concerns about Victoria’s voting system, which uses group voting tickets. GVTs allow a party to allocate preferences to their own lists and come into play if you vote “above the line” in the Victorian Legislative Council.
