’11 Indian ships exited Strait of Hormuz, 13 still in Gulf,’ says MEA

New Delhi: Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on Thursday that 11 Indian ships have left the Strait of Hormuz and 13 ships continue to be in the Persian Gulf.

Speaking at a press conference here, Jaiswal was asked about reports that Iranian ships may first take a route through Pakistani territorial waters and then through Indian territorial waters to avoid the US blockade and whether special permission from Indian authorities is required for this.

“Regarding reports that Iranian ships may be using the route via Indian territorial waters to avoid blockades: If ships of other countries want to ply in international waters, there is no need for any permission. However, for the specific question of entering Indian waters, this is a technical issue for the Ministry of Shipping or relevant technical authorities to answer,” Jaiswal said. he said.

“As a result of our diplomatic engagements and talks with the Iranians, we have made a forward move. So far, 11 Indian ships have left the Strait of Hormuz. 13 ships continue to be in the Persian Gulf, and we continue to be in contact with Iranian officials so that the remaining ships can pass through the Strait of Hormuz and reach their destination in India.”


Earlier on Wednesday, Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director of Shipping at the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, said all Indian seafarers remain safe in the area and no incident involving an Indian flagged ship has been reported since the last briefing in the last 48 hours.

“The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways continues to coordinate with the Ministry of External Affairs, Indian missions and maritime stakeholders to ensure the welfare of seafarers and uninterrupted maritime operations. I am happy to note that all Indian seafarers remain safe in the region and no incident involving an Indian flagged ship has been reported since the last briefing in the last 48 hours. No incident has also been reported on any foreign flagged ship carrying Indian seafarers,” he said.
