Man with ‘threatening behaviour’ suspected of carrying crossbow shot by police
A man was shot by police in south Wales after reports he was believed to be carrying a crossbow.
Shortly before midnight on Friday emergency services responded to a call in St Edward Street, Newport, following reports of “threatening behaviour”.
A Gwent Police spokesman said a 21-year-old Newport man “who was found to be carrying a weapon” was shot by officers.
It was learned that the health condition of the suspect, who was taken to the hospital, was stable.
The spokesman said: “Police officers, as well as specially trained firearms officers, attended the scene after a man was spotted carrying a weapon believed to be a crossbow.

“During our response, a 21-year-old Newport man was shot by officers with a police-issued firearm.”
Deputy Chief Constable Nicholas McLain said: “We understand the concern this matter may cause in our communities, but as this is an isolated incident there is no ongoing risk to the public.”
“We are not looking for anyone else in connection with this matter,” Mr. McLain said.
“Whilst reports of firearms and weapons-related crime are rare in Gwent, we take all reports of this nature seriously and respond to them in a professional and proportionate manner based on the level of risk posed by the information available.”
