Russia launches deadly attacks in Ukraine overnight despite Zelenskyy’s ceasefire
Ukrainian State Emergency Services said that at least four people were injured in Russia’s southeastern Dnipropetrovsk region, one person was injured in the northeastern Sumy region, and seven people, including two children, were injured in Kharkiv.
Cross-border attacks continued despite both Kiev and Moscow declaring temporary ceasefires with their respective rivals.
Russian President Vladimir Putin this week announced a unilateral ceasefire on May 8 and May 9 to coincide with the annual “Victory Day” celebrations marking the anniversary of the end of World War II.
Zelenskyy later said Ukraine would implement a 24-hour ceasefire starting at midnight on May 5. Russia did not join the ceasefire and continued front-line activities as well as missile and drone strikes across Ukraine.
“We can confirm that the Russian side has derailed the ceasefire regime,” Zelenskyy said on Wednesday, adding that Kiev would decide on possible next actions.

Russia sets new record for drone and missile attacks against Ukraine in April
“Ukraine has made it clear that it will act in the same way, taking into account Russia’s persistent calls through the media and social networks demanding a ceasefire during the Moscow parade,” Zelenskyy said, referring to the military event planned for May 9 in Moscow’s Red Square. he said.
The Russian Defense Ministry has warned that it will “launch a massive retaliatory missile attack on the center of Kiev” if Ukraine attacks Victory Day celebrations.
On Thursday, Zelenskyy again criticized Moscow’s ongoing attacks. “Russia continues to kill people, completely irrationally concerned about just a few hours of silence in a part of Moscow,” he said in a statement, referring to May 9 celebrations.
Zelenskyy said, “Ukraine will act fairly every day. We proposed silence starting from midnight on May 6. This regime was violated by Russia yesterday and today.” he said.
“As a mirror reaction and in response to Russia’s attacks, our long-term sanctions will follow; in response to Russia’s readiness to move towards diplomacy, we will move towards diplomacy,” he added.
