Rebel Wilson is a ‘fantastical liar’ who ‘made up terrible allegations against multiple people’, court told | Rebel Wilson

Rebel Wilson was accused in court of being a liar who made lurid claims about his colleagues and completely rewrote history.

The Pitch Perfect star dodged that reckless assessment in the final hours of a heated libel war in which she was sued by Charlotte MacInnes, the star of The Deb, the musical comedy Wilson directed, co-produced and starred in.

MacInnes alleges Wilson slandered him in a series of social media posts, suggesting he was a liar and a sellout who dismissed a sexual harassment complaint to advance his career.

The posts claimed that MacInnes had confided in the older actor and later recanted; The film’s co-producer felt uncomfortable when Amanda Ghost wanted to shower and bath together.

MacInnes denied making a complaint or recanting, claiming the pair were not uncomfortable bathing in their swimsuits after Ghost suffered a medical episode in September 2023.

In an emphatic closing speech in the Federal Court on Friday, MacInnes’ barrister Sue Chrysanthou SC accused Wilson of a “complete overhaul of history” riddled with dishonesty.

She noted that the Bridesmaids actor told local producer Greer Simpkin about the alleged complaint the day it was made to her, but it was denied in court.

Simpkin testified that she did not hear Wilson’s co-star claim he was upset by the incident until he was quoted by Ghost a week later.

Chrysanthou told the court this was just one example of glaring inconsistencies in Wilson’s evidence, which was rejected by others.

“He is a fantastic liar who has made horrific allegations about multiple people and whose own witnesses have discredited him,” he said.

“We say nothing Ms. Wilson says can be believed.”

Ms. Chrysanthou said the first-time director lied to Ghost about receiving complaints to create a divide with MacInnes, whom he tried to paint as a troublemaker.

Wilson argued that a message accusing the young actor of leaking information to the film’s writer made clear that he was determined to undermine MacInnes’ relationships with others.

The undisputed facts of the bathroom incident are that a medical incident occurred, no one was disturbed, and no witness thought anything untoward occurred.

Chrysanthou told the court: “It’s hard to imagine a less sexy environment for some form of abuse to occur; the chills, the hives and the tea provided by (the witness).”

His lawyer said MacInnes had suffered devastating damage as a result of his social media posts and had not worked since being cast in a stage production, a role he had previously secured.

“My client can’t eat, can’t sleep, is distressed… (he’s) afraid of what Rebel Wilson will do to him next,” Chrysanthou said.

“No young woman dreams of being the center of attention and being slandered by a celebrity.”

But Wilson said it did no harm to the young star’s reputation or career, pointing to her starring role and the record six-figure deal MacInnes had secured.

“He changed his story, he was stunned, and he was given great benefits,” he said.

Wilson testified that he had seen numerous photographs of MacInnes on international trips and in expensive hotels, some of which were sent to him by the ‘I hate Amanda Ghost fan club’.

“Before The Deb, she was relatively unknown and (I) realized she didn’t have the opportunity to travel the world in luxury,” the A-lister wrote in her statement.

His lawyer, Dauid Sibtain SC, will begin his closing argument on Friday afternoon.
